At Iprona we pride ourselves not just on the unparalleled quality of our berries, but also on our business ethics and environmental impact as suppliers.
Because the supply chain is fully controlled by Iprona, including storage and pre-processing, we embrace the implementation of full traceability, in which baskets of fruit are specifically labelled and allow a finished extract to be precisely tracked back to its farm of origin.
Berries are grown in Styria, stored and pre-processed in the region, then transported to northern Italy for the final steps. The in-house supply chain incorporates cooperation with both farmers and regulatory authorities regarding allowed pesticides and fungicides.
Though berry treatment requirements of the US FDA and EU and Asian guidelines are not uniformly identical, Iprona is committed to meeting or exceeding the regulations of all countries with which we do business.
Additionally, Iprona is certified fully to ISO 14001, the voluntary international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system.

The Styrian Berry Cooperative
An area known as the ‘Green Heart’ of southeast Austria is home to the Styrian Berry Cooperative, proud creators of the largest black elderberry (Sambucus nigra, L) cultivation on earth.
Product packagers in the food, supplement and pharma industries put black elderberries to great use—the robust Haschberg variety especially, thanks to its intense, anthocyanin-packed nutrient profile. More and more scientific studies are providing evidence of elder’s therapeutic effects, and our Styrian Haschbergs deliver consistently superior quality versus other black elderberry types from elsewhere.
Since the cooperative`s founding in 1962, our experienced farmers have collaborated with leading academic researchers and berry-growing experts to identify best practices growers with the potential to further strengthen key characteristics of our fruit. From a modest first harvest in 1976, they have flourished into an organization of 500 contract farmers that now harvest 10,000 tons of stellar elderberries each year. Our fruit is grown either conventionally or organically, in compliance with EU standards. Our crops are in high demand, not just in Austria but throughout the EU, the United States and China. We are fully committed to delivering only the highest quality elderberries to our customers in all sectors from food and beverage to supplements and pharma.
